Obituary of Hilda Wittreich
Hilda Wittreich was born in Handlern, Gottschee, Yugoslavia on August 9, 1923. She left Gottschee in 1941 along with her family and settled in Untersteiermark in the town of Langenaarch. There she worked for a government agency in Rahn. In 1945 due to the aftermath of World War II her family fled to the city of Klagenfurt in the Kaernten region of Austria. Subsequently, Hilda worked for the English occupational forces at the Hotel Sandwirt, which served as their local headquarters. The family immigrated to the United States in 1952 where they settled in Ridgewood, Queens, New York. She purchased a two family home on Woodbine Street in Ridgewood in 1961. After working for a knitting mill as a Merrow sewing machine operator making sweaters for over thirty years, she retired in 1986.
Hilda leaves behind two brothers: Alfred Wittreich of Ridgewood, NY and Robert Wittreich with his wife Marie of Lancaster, PA; a niece Karen Cook with her husband George of Lancaster, PA; two nephews, Gerhard Wittreich with his wife Donna of Hockessin, DE and Helmut Wittreich with his wife Barbara of Somerset, NJ. She also has six great nieces/nephews: Kristin, Brian, Alexander, Jason, Christof and Markus.
Hilda was a regular communicant at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church in Ridgewood, NY.
